Grand Prix Cup Update: Final Standings
June 4, 2008

The first ever season of the Master Trek Grand Prix Cup was exciting from start to finish. American Chess Events hopes that this will be the start of something great for Arizona’s scholastic chess players, and we hope that the first season will serve as a great foundation for years to come.

Philip Godfrey

Alec Andersen

The MVP prize for best overall performance by any player of any section will be awarded to Philip Godfrey of Chevalier Noir. Philip got off to an impressive start in the 1000-1299 Section, and he never looked back. Despite not even playing the final two Cup tournaments, his Rating Bonus points (287 rating points gained in 6 months!) were enough to push him over the top and end with 34 total Grand Prix points. Staying in that section, and right on Philip’s heels throughout the entire season, we saw Alec Andersen finish 1st runner up to the MVP honor with 32 Grand Prix points. Alec gained 240 rating points in the short time of 6 months. Jonathan Booher finished in 3rd place with 19 Grand Prix points.

The 1300-1599 Section saw some of the most consistent “Trekkers” battle it out against very tough Adult Participation competition every tournament. Manas Lakshmiprasad took the All-Star Jacket honors with 23 Grand Prix points, while Matthew Hoffman and Daniel Bryant finished tied for 2nd and 3rd with 19 Grand Prix points each.

Dipro Chakraborty

Daniel Pecherski

Matthew Hoffman

In the 1600-1899 Section we saw young Daniel Pecherski (23 Grand Prix points) lead throughout the entire season, but when he stumbled slightly down the stretch, Dipro Chakraborty (25 Grand Prix points) snuck in behind him by capturing back-to-back first place finishes in two very tough tournaments! Both of those players seemed to be front runners for the MVP prize as well, but neither one had earned quite enough Rating Bonus points to keep up with Godfrey and Andersen. Trek Veteran John Williams finished 3rd with 18 Grand Prix points.

Finally, we move onto the 1900 and Up Section. These young players had the daunting task each tournament of going up against some of the best competition Arizona has to offer in International Master Dionisio Aldama, Life Master Joel Johnson, and FIDE Master Daniel Rensch. However, in hind sight, having the chance to pull upsets each tournament (which many of them did) could be credited in boosting their ratings as well. David Adelberg (23 Grand Prix points) ran away with this section, and he was certainly in the running for the MVP prize right up until the end. Randel Eng (9 Grand Prix points) finished in 2nd, and Ben Marmont (5 Grand Prix points) finished in 3rd.

Don’t miss the award ceremony which will take place at the first Master Trek Grand Prix Cup of the Fall Season on August 30th at 9:00am at ASU. All 12 All-Stars will be acknowledged and rewarded for their great performances over the past 6 months! We hope to see you there!

The complete final standings after all rating and tournament performance bonuses were totaled up, and the results are below for everyone to see! The players listed below are all those who were eligible for Grand Prix Cup prizes by competing in at least 4 Master Trek Grand Prix Cup tournaments.
